Monday 2012 Bluebonnet Girls State Governor Hannah Cleveland encouraged the citizens of the 2013 session to make the most of their time at Girls State. Governor Cleveland shared her thoughts and advice during the Opening Assembly. Earlier in the assembly, Marty Peters, President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Texas, also addressed the citizens and challenged them to find the music in their hearts.
Assembly speakers also included Dan Corbin, Commander, American Legion, Department of Texas, and Steve Anderson, Assistant to the President for Administration and Public Affair at Texas Lutheran University.
Governor Cleveland’s Remarks: “Good Morning, Bluebonnet Girls State 2013 Citizens! I can not tell you how extremely thrilled I am to be up here, speaking to all of you! Now, I don’t know about y’all, but I have definitely been eagerly anticipating this session of Bluebonnet Girls State! The Girls State Staff here have all worked so hard to ensure that this session will be very successful and very fun! They have all planned lectures, songs and sessions in order to fill you all with knowledge, intelligence, skills and even laughs and smiles. I have been very blessed the past few days to have spent some time with all of the very special ladies that make up the Girls State Staff. They are all truly unique with their own rare set of talents and abilities and that’s why they’re here. They are passionate about this program and care about making each of you have a super time here at Girls State.
“So now it’s up to you! The Staff here has created a foundation, the bones and is giving you the tools to produce a successful Girls State experience, but now it’s your time. You all have a neat chance to make an outstanding experience. You can make this time what you want it to be. The ball is in your court as Frances Goff would say. Do not be afraid to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Do something that you may be would not usually do. Run for office, decorate your city, or sing the songs at the top of your lungs. It’s okay to mess up or to try new things. Be yourself here. We want you to have a blast and we want you to find your niche or that thing you excel at. There is definitely a job for everyone here and each job is just as important as the next. I know that you can all have an extraordinary time and truly be impacted by Girls State if you give it a chance. Don’t let homesickness or even being so focused on winning a particular office distract you from making this experience the very best it can be.
“Make friends, learn, listen, contribute to House and Senate, and just make the most of this time because it is truly special and it only lasts seven days. You’re extraordinary and that’s why you’re here. Make the most of it. I wish you all the very best, have a great week!”
