Bluebonnet Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Texas. The session will be at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. The following instructions are sent for your information and guidance. As a citizen of Bluebonnet Girls State, you should keep the following pledge in mind so that there will be an understanding of both the principles of Girls State and your obligations as a citizen.
As a citizen of Girls State of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Texas, I voluntarily make the following pledge:
I will obey the rules of Girls State.
I will be present for every portion of the Girls State session, and I will remain for its entirety.
I will take a serious and conscientious interest in discharging my duties as a citizen of Girls State.
I understand that this is an Americanism program and that it is a study of city, county, and state government.
I will salute the American Flag.
If elected to office, I will serve that office to the best of my ability.
I will abide by the judgment of those responsible for this Americanism program.
I will make a formal report (written or oral) of my impression of Girls State upon my return home.
I will live in residence as a citizen of Girls State.
In so far as possible, I will take an active part in the affairs of the party, the city, and county to which I am assigned.
I will be fair and honest in all my dealings with my fellow citizens.
I am not a member of and do not subscribe to the principles of any group opposed to our form of government.
DATE AND TIME OF ARRIVAL: TRAVEL FORM
Bluebonnet Girls State will be open for registration at Alumni Student Center, Texas Lutheran University, Seguin, on Arrival Day. Please make arrangements to arrive in Seguin after 12:00 Noon and before 3:00 P.M. on that day. The Unit Chairman will advise each girl about available transportation options in her area (i.e. car, charter bus, plane). Fill in and mail the enclosed TRAVEL FORM as soon as arrangements can be made but no later than May 1st. If traveling by bus, representatives of the Girls State staff will meet you at the Seguin bus station. If traveling by plane, private arrangements must be made by your Unit, school, or parents for transportation to and from Seguin. Girls State does not provide transportation to and from the San Antonio Airport.
Bluebonnet Girls State will not be responsible for anything that is shipped; DO NOT send any luggage by parcel post or express.
MEDICAL EXAMINATION: MEDICAL HISTORY AND DOCTOR’S CERTIFICATE
Good health and physical fitness are MOST essential to each citizen. The enclosed MEDICAL HISTORY must be filled in by your parents and mailed to the Girls State registrar by May 2nd. This history does not require a doctor’s visit. The enclosed DOCTOR’S CERTIFICATE must be completed and signed by your physician NO EARLIER than June 6th. The DOCTOR’S CERTIFICATE is to verify that the citizen is in good physical condition and has no contagious or infectious disease. You are to bring it with you to present FOR ADMISSION on Arrival Day. IT IS YOUR ADMISSION CARD! If you do not present this certificate at the time of registration or it is not properly dated and signed, you will be taken to the doctor in Seguin. Your parents will be billed for this expense.
The Girls State Committee reserves the right to reject any girl who does not meet the physical requirements or who does not bring her Doctor’s Certificate for presentation.
REMEMBER, your Travel Form and Medical History are parts of your application of registration, and both must be returned to the Girls State registrar by May 2nd.
WAIVER OF CLAIM:
The Waiver of Claim must be returned to the Girls State registrar by May 2nd, in order for the citizen’s application to be complete. The waiver must be witnessed, dated, and signed.

LOSS OF CLOTHING AND PERSONAL PROPERTY:
Every possible effort will be made to safeguard your property. Girls State cannot assume any responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects. As a part of the program, a Girls State bank will be available for the safekeeping of money and valuables. It will be organized on a deposit and check system. All money, except pocket change, is to be deposited in the bank upon your arrival. You will be refunded, upon departure, any amount not previously withdrawn. Do not bring excessive amounts of money; $100-$150 has proven to be a sufficient amount. If you have a return trip ticket for public transportation, it must be left with the Girls State transportation office. Girls State will not be responsible for valuables not deposited in the bank.
All mail should be addressed to you, c/o Bluebonnet Girls State, Texas Lutheran University, 1000 W. Court Street, Seguin, Texas 78155. Rules do not permit you to receive flowers or visitors. Please advise family and friends of these rules.
CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT:
Please bring all items listed below and others you think essential. (Laundry facilities are not available.)
Clothes should be suitable for hot summer weather: summer dresses, skirts, blouses, shorts and/or slacks, pajamas, robe, raincoat, shower shoes, and a light weight jacket or sweater. Cropped tops are not permitted. Dresses are appropriate for guest speakers, the trip to the Capitol, and other special activities. (Approximately 3 to 4 should be sufficient.) Jogging and/or walking will be part of morning physical activity so bring appropriate shoes.
- Toilet articles (soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
- Sanitary supplies
- Coat hangers
- Camera, film
- Notebook, stationary, envelopes, pens, pencils, stamps
- Pillow, blanket, linens (bedsheets, sufficient towels and wash cloths)
- Campaign Material, quotation books, or other materials for speech writing
DO NOT bring prepared campaign material. (Blank poster board, butcher paper, construction paper, or markers are acceptable to bring. Also, bring string, tacks, and masking tape to hang signs.) Campaign materials and essentials may also be purchased in the Girls State store.
If you are accustomed to taking a laxative to maintain regular habits, please bring it. If you routinely take name brand tablets for headache and menstrual pain, bring these also. If you wear contact lenses, bring glasses and/or the lens prescription in case of loss.
If you play the piano, please bring music. Bring any costume and materials necessary to perform if you wish to audition for the entertainment nights. Musical instruments should be brought; trumpeters for reveille and taps may be needed. If you qualify, please indicate when you return your Medical History and bring your trumpet.
***If possible, contact a former citizen of Girls State. She will be able to give you more information about the program and its activities.
Visitors are welcome to attend the closing ceremonies on Departure Day at 8:30 A.M. Please ask them to arrive prior to that time and take seats in the bleacher area. Visits or telephone calls of an emergency nature must go through the Director. In the event of an emergency, please contact the Director of Girls State at Texas Lutheran University, Seguin, Texas (830-372-8000 or 830-372-6496).
Citizens may check out any time after the presentation of certificates on Departure Day, which will be approximately 10:00 a.m. Please do not plan your departure prior to 10:00 a.m. on Departure Day.
