State Party Officers Chosen

posted in: 2011 Session | 0

Because the Girls State program is entirely non-partisan, citizens operate with mock political parties. They elect precinct, county and state party officials and write their own party platform. The National and Federal parties convened June 14, 2011 to pick their state party officials. State Federal Party officials are Chair Miriam Felder, Vice-Chair Tara McCullough, House Whip Montana Blair, Senate Whip Paloma Rivera. State National Party Officials are Chair Kallie Fuchs, Vice-Chair Jenna Dunn, House Whip Vinamrata Singel, Senate Whip Sarah Gates. For a complete list of party officials, including county and precinct chairwomen, please download the 2011 edition of The Bluebonnet, the official newsletter of the Bluebonnet Girls State program.

Welcome 2011 Citizens

Texas Bluebonnet Girls State is a mythical 51st state where, for a week, participants organize their own city, county, and state governments. They elect their own officials. They learn the duties of the various city, county and state offices. They introduce and debate their own bills in a mock legislature. The program concludes with a visit to the State Capitol building in Austin where the girls are given an opportunity to sight-see and meet state officials. The purpose of Girls State is to educate young women in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.

The Girls State program is sponsored as a public service to the community, state and nation by the more than twenty thousand members of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Texas. The administrative staff and counselors in charge of the program are well trained and experienced leaders of young women. They are women of high ideals who are recognized as being responsible persons in their respective communities. The girls are properly chaperoned. Counselors are in constant attendance. No girl is allowed to leave the grounds except on scheduled trips of the entire group.

The site of this year’s Girls State session is Texas Lutheran University located in Seguin, Texas. The program begins on Sunday, June 12 and ends Saturday, June 18, 2011. For more information about Girls State admission, please contact your high school,  local American Legion Auxiliary unit or  the ALA Department of Texas.
